Week 6 Flashcards
Do hotter temperatures always negatively effect performance?
No, is someone is running short distances (like sprinting) hotter temperatures can warm their muscles making them more effective.
What is the difference in wind compared to other factors that impact performance.
Related - higher amounts of wind = better performance. While all others are inversely related.
What is the difference between acclimatisation and acclimation?
Acclimatisation describes that adaptive changes in response to changes in the natural climate while Acclimation describes the adaptive changes that occur in response to experimentally induced changes.
What percentage of athletes prepared specifically using heat acclimation/ acclimatisation?
15.3%
What are the 4 classic markers of Heat acclimation?
- Lower heart rate
- Lower core body temperature
- Increased sweat rate.
- Improved performance in hot conditions.
What differed among Long-term HA vs short and medium types (more)?
Long-term HA:
- lower resting HR
- lowered core body temperature
- improved exercise performance.
When is self- regulated HA the best method?
Good for competitive high performance athletes who are used to pushing themselves.
Is heat acclimation forever?
No these adaptations decreased by 2.3% after no exposure to the same stimuli.
What is significant about HA difference in males and females?
Females need a greater heat stimulus.
What is important to remember with occupational heat stress?
In all jobs, there is not one sole worker profile.
What are some ways to reduce heat stress in workers?
Change working times to cooler parts of the day, complete fair heat readiness and tolerance screening to screen out individuals. Cooling clothing (ex. phase change and liquid cooling vests).
What is important when. designing clothing for hot environments?
Cannot interference with areas that people sweat the most.
