Week 5 Flashcards
What does hyperthermia mean?
Gaining heat.
Why can convection cause both heat gain and heat loss.
Its movement of air or water across the body and this can be either hot or cold. As the fluid moves its taking heat away from your body.
What is a benefit to having smaller surface area.
Less heat dissipation.
What is unique about the classification of evaporation?
Its wet heat exchange.
Why do humid environments pose of a threat than hot environments?
Humid = there is a lot of heat and water vapour already in the air and if this is the case, air can’t take in more water and sweat has no wear to go.
How does temperature effect marathoners?
Heat decreases performance aganist all levels of ability. This is because when our body temperature is high, our brain cannot recruit muscles as well.
What are the cognitive impairments associated with hyperthermia?
- Decreased psychometric performance.
- Increased neural resource requirement.
- Decreased arousal.
Why is hyperventilating bad when you are hot.
It’s bad because you increase your ventilation rate and breath out more CO2 which causes cerebral arteries to constrict and decrease blood flow.
Why is Ritalin an ergogenic aid?
Increases the activity of dopamine in the brain which increases exercise performance in the heat.
Why does blood flow away from the gut and to the skin and brain, especially in hot conditions bad?
This increases the gut’s permeability and endotoxins (or bad bacteria) can enter into circulation causing side effects like sceptic shock.
Why is hot temperatures bad for elderly individuals?
They have impaired thermal regulation.
What is the best way to cure hyperthermia quickly and effectively?
Immersion into cool water
With occupational clothing, why do you have to mindful of choices especially concerning the head.
Head is a major site of heat exchange and is bad in the heat or cold.
What is a main reason why heavy clothing is bad in the heat.
It blocks evaporation by creating a barrier and creates a war, and humid microclimate instead with the trapped sweat.
