Week 6 Flashcards
MO (Motivating Operation)
umbrella term (value altering; behavior altering)
- any antecedent event that momentarily alters the reinforcing efficacy (or value) of a particular stimulus
- alters the current probability of behaviors that have previously been reinforced
EO (Establishing Operation)
- type of MO
value altering:
- establish effect – increases reinforcing efficacy of stimulus
behavior altering:
- evocative effect – makes behaviors that produce that stimulus more likely
AO (Abolishing Operation)
value altering:
- abolishing effect – “why?”; stimulus is currently less effective as SR
behavior altering:
- adaptive effect – “what happened?”; behavior less likely
Deprivation
EO example (for behaviors maintained by SR+)
- period of time without access to reinforcing stimulus
Aversive Stimulation
EO example (for behaviors maintained by SR-)
- these establish their own removal as reinforcing
- ex: presentation of work, pain, electric shock
Satiation
AO example
- for behavior maintained by SR+
- you’ve had too much of something or free access to something
Removal/absence of aversive stimulation
AO example
- for behavior maintained by SR-
- ex: no work, no pain, etc
Unconditioned Motivating Operations (UMO)
- motivating operation who value-altering effects are unlearned
- establishes there own removal as reinforcing
SR+ ex: deprivation of food/water/sleep
SR- ex: pain, heat
Conditioned Motivation Operations (CMO)
- motivating operations shoes value-altering effects are learned
- the reinforcer involved is a conditioned one (ie some learning was necessary for that thing to be a reinforcer
- deprivation or station on Netflix; high/low balance in bank account
Reinforcement
updated definition
- a stimulus change..
- contingent on a respsone..
- which increases the future probability of that response in similar situations or contexts…
- in the pretense of a similar stimuli
Punishment
updated definition
- a stimulus change…
- contingent on a response…
- which DECREASES future probability of that response in similar situations/contexts…
- in the presence of a similar stimuli
Stimulus Control
when a behavior is…
- more less likely to occur
- in the pretense or absence of a particular stimulus
- due to a history of reinforcement fo that behavior being more or less likely on the precise or absence of that stimulus
Discriminative Stimulus for Reinforcement (SD)
- a stimulus that is correlated with an increase probability of reinforcement for a response
- SD signals reinforcement is available or likely
- evokes that response/the response occurs
Discriminative Stimulus for Extinction (SΔ)
- a stimulus that is correlated with a decrease (or zero) probability or reinforcement for a response
- SΔ signals reinforcement is NOT available or likely
- SΔ does NOT evoke the response/the response does not occur
Multiple Schedules
- procedure in which clear stimuli are associated with different, altering reinforcement schedules
- most often reinforcement vs extinction
Stimulus Discrimination
on a spectrum with stimulus generalization
- the response occurs only in the presence of SD (the stimuli that were paired with reinforcement)
- not in the precise of other stimuli
- aka “under tight stimulus control”
Stimulus Genralization
on a spectrum with stimulus discrimination
- the response occurs in the presence of stimuli other than those that were paired with reinforcement
- not only in the presence of those that were directly trained
- “under loose stimulus control”
