Week 5 - Writing With Integrity Flashcards
What does it mean to write with integrity?
Use good sources, use sources fairly, write mindfully and for the reader, credit all sources.
Tips for judging a sources credibility
- Is the publisher reputable?
- Has it been peer reviewed (is there an editorial board, are reviewers names provided)?
- Is it a trusted author?
- Is the source current (computer science has a very short currency of months, social sciences about 5-10 years, humanities decades-centuries) primary sources most current.
- Does the source have a reference list of bibliography?
- Has the source been cited by others (unless it’s very new)?
Tips for using sources well
- Give yourself time
- Read actively
- Read with purpose
- Take good notes
- Record your response to the source
- Record the context not just the words
To write mindfully is-
Write with clarity
-uncover a topic rather than cover it
Write with coherence
Write with concision
To write for the reader is
To have a conversation with the reader. Must be reader focused (how will they use the info, is the reader well educated, are they new to the topic, do they have formal style, what kind of evidence will the reader expect?)
What is the curse of knowledge?
A difficulty in imagining what it is like for someone else to not know something that you know. Common problems is where student know that the lecturer knows what they’re talking about, makes assumptions, leaves out important info including foundational knowledge.
If you give the reader the wrong role in the conversation, and assign them more knowledge than they actually have, you till adopt the wrong role as the writer. Your writing will miss the mark, your reader will suffer and your skills and knowledge won’t be effectively demonstrated.
Structuring sentences
Begin sentences with old info and complete sentences with new information. Info that is new at the end of one sentence becomes old at the start of the next sentence, improving cohesion and flow.
Prefer shorter sentences over longer.
How do your credit your sources in APA?
Requires all sources to be acknowledged in the text body and reference list. Reference list gives detail about the source itself -authors -publication date -title -publisher -type of source -DOI (If available)
