WEEK 5 - Topic 11 - Visual Area Flashcards
1
Q
Where is the primary visual (striate) cortex located?
A
Extreme posterior tip of the occipital lobe
2
Q
What cortex is located at the tip of the occipital lobe?
A
Primary visual (striate) cortex
3
Q
Where does the primary visual (striate) cortex receive its sensory information from?
A
- Receives visual information that originates on the retina of the eye
- There is a contralateral map of visual space on the primary visual cortex - the primary visual cortex in the left hemisphere receives signals from the right VISUAL FIELD (not eye), and right visual cortex receives signals from the left visual field
4
Q
Where is the visual association area located?
A
Surrounding the primary visual cortex in the occipital lobe
5
Q
What is the function of the visual association area?
A
- The visual association area uses past visual experiences (memories) to interpret visual stimuli
- Enables recognition of person’s face, flower, etc
6
Q
What is the function of the primary visual cortex?
A
Responsible for processing visual information
