WEEK 5 - Topic 11 - Olfactory and Gustatory Cortex Flashcards
Where is the primary olfactory cortex located?
Medial aspect of the temporal lobe in a region called the uncus
How does the primary olfactory cortex receive impulses?
Afferent fibres from smell receptors in the superior nasal cavities send impulses along the olfactory tracts to the olfactory cortices

It allows conscious awareness of different odours.
Why has the rhinencephalon decreased in size over time and what has happened to it?
It has decreased in size due to lack of use and has been replaced by the limbic system (emotional region)
Where is the gustatory cortex located?
In the insula, deep to the temporal lobe
What is the function of the gustatory cortex?
It perceives taste stimuli
