Q

Name and describe the layers of the meninges

A
Dura Mater:
- outermost layer, tough connective tissue
- Double layer: outer- periosteal, inner- menningeal
Arachnoid Mater:
- middle layer, loose CT covering
- resembles a spider web
Pia Mater:
- inner most layer, delicate CT
- clings onto the brain

Q

What is the function of each of the layers of the meninges?

A
Dura Mater: - protect brain and spinal cord and limits excessive movement
Arachnoid Mater:
- hold cerbospinal fluid
Pia Mater
- folds to brain surface
- carries blood vessels

6
Q

what is cerbospinal fluid?

A

this is fluid located in the arachnoid mater which acts as a cushion or buffer for the brain, providing basic protection. (shock absorber)

9
Q

why are there some enlarged discs in the vertebrae?

A
  • more cell bodies in the grey matter
  • more neurons enter/exit here
  • supply innervation to/from the limbs
