Week 5 - Short Term Memory Flashcards
What are the three stages of human memory?
Sensory
Short term
Long term
Define memory
The process involved in retaining, retrieving and using information about stimuli
What is the modal model of memory
The model proposed by Atkinson and Shriffin that describes memory as a mechanism that involves processing information through a series of stages including short term and long term memory
What is sensory memory
A brief stage of memory that holds information for seconds or fractions of a second
What does persistence of vision refer to
The continued perception of light for a fraction of a second after the original light stimulus had been extinguished
What is the “whole report method”?
A procedure used in sperlings experiment on the properties of the visual icon, in which participants were instructed to report all of the stimuli they saw in a brief presentation
What is iconic memory
Brief sensory memory for visual stimuli that lasts for a fraction of a second after a stimulus is extinguished
What is echoic memory
Brief sensory memory for auditory stimuli
How long can short term memory hold information
30 seconds
What is a digit span
The number of digits a person can remember
What is chunking in relation to memory
Combining small units into larger ones. Eg when individual words are combined into a meaningful sentence
What does the working memory store
Information for complex tasks such as comprehension, learning and reasoning
What is the role of the phonological loop
To store verbal and auditory information
What is the role of the visuospatial sketch pad
Processed visual and spatial information
What is the phonological similarity effect
Occurs when letters or words sound similar are confused, EG T and P
