week 5 quiz Flashcards
what is negative pressure breathing? (inhalation)
- to get air in, need to lower air pressure and create gradient
*lower air pressure relative to outside
*contracts 2 muscles that expands thoracic cavity to lower air pressure:
1)rib cage muscles
2)diaphragm
what are the respiratory pigments?
1) hemoglobin(protein)->based on iron, binder & deliverer of oxygen
2) hemocyanin: copper-based pigment found in arthropods & mollusks
what is cooperative binding?
proteins shape change for transport for easier binding and do so each time the shape changes
what is the dissociation curve?
small change in partial pressure causes large change in delivery of O2
what is the bohr shift?
*shows hemoglobin is more willing to give up oxygen to cells
*CO2 made in cellular respiration lowers blood pH * lowers affinity of hemoglobin for O2
oxygen dissociation curve & body size relation?
*smaller bodied creatures-> need oxygen delivered more readily, lower affinity for oxygen
*larger bodied creatures-> higher affinity
oxygen dissociation curve for fetus & mother?
fetus has higher affinity because it only gets oxygen depleted of normal amount by mother
