lab plant quiz Flashcards
Xerophytes
Plants adapted to survive in dry conditions
Reduced leaves with waxy coating to prevent water loss
* Fewer stomata
* Fleshy stems for storing
water
* Photosynthesis occurs
mainly in the stem
* Large, shallow root
systems or long tap root
Hydrophytes
Plants that live in water
Stomata and chloroplasts found on upper leaf surface
- Exposed leaves have waxy coating to help shed water
- Thick leaves may have air pockets / sacs for buoyancy
- Low profile and less rigid structure to keep from getting toppled
- Small root system
- Expanded petiole acts as a float
Carnivorous Plants
Adapted to low nutrient environments
Have devised other ways of getting needed nutrients such as nitrogen
Bladderworts
Adapted to float in water and are carnivorous.
- Leaf petiole is fleshy and inflated with air
- Underwater bladders suck in prey
