Q

Two desalination plants locations (RO plants)

what do they do?

and where do they get the sea water from ?

A

Fwd engine room module on port and stbd sides.

They produce fresh water for consumption by a process called reverse osmosis.

They get sea water from O comp tank.

13
Q

How are RO plants controlled ?

A

They are controlled via the local control panel and a remote stop button is provided on the PMS at the CCC and SPC.

(A start button on the LCP initiates the run up of the sequence.)

1) normally controlled from ?

2) LPE can be crash stopped from what two locations ?

3) LPE is located where?

4) system code ?

A

1) locally in the electrolyser compartment

2) by making the emergency stations switch on the SCC and also by a switch outside the electrolyser compartment on 3 deck.

18
Q

Prior to operating an MPOG what must happen ?

A

The canister must undergo though inspection as once the process has begun the temp can reach 470 degrees within the unit and if a generator is contaminated with hydrocarbons at that temp may explode.

19
Q

How long does each canister of MPOG run for And How much oxygen does each canister produce ?

A

Approx 60-90 mins generating time and creates 3300 LTS of breathable oxygen in that time.

20
Q

System code for scrubbers ?

A

SCO

21
Q

How does a CO2 scrubber work ?

A

The scrubber utilises the properties of the chemical Amine (MEA) and the CO2 laden air Is draw into the scrubber where it’s mixed with an Amine spray which absorbs the CO2. The cold purified air is then released back into the ship’s ventilation system. The CO2 laden Amine is then heated which causes it to give us the CO2 which is then collected and compressed and the CO2 is then sent to the GIMP or discharged over board.

22
Q

Who operates the CO2 scrubbers ?

A

The SQEP members of the FWD ME staff.

23
Q

Both Scrubbers are controlled how and indicate where ?

A

Controlled locally and indicate on PMS.

24
Q

Scrubbers can be crash stopped by making what from where ?

A

The emergency stations switch on the SCC.

25
Q

Scrubber locations ?

A

Both located in the Air purification compartment on 3 deck PORT side below SRs mess.

26
Q

What is used to remove CO2 for escape purposes ?

A

Lithium hydroxide curtains.

27
Q

How many panels of LIOH curtains are in each box and how big is one panel ?

A

72-77 panels per box and they’re approx the size of an A4 sheet of paper.

28
Q

How do you know when a LIOH panel has been fully saturated with CO2 ?

What should always be used when handling these curtains ?

A

The panel will go brittle due to the chemical reactions and will also be warm to the touch.

Always use the PPE supplies with each box when handling the curtains.

29
Q

Potential sources of hydrogen into the subs atmosphere ?

A

From the main batteries or possibly from leaks of pressurised H2 bottles stored in DG Room.

30
Q

Potential sources of carbon monoxide on board ?

A

Typically produced by Combustion engines (eg running the DGs)

31
Q

Potential nitrogen sources on board ?

And how would you remove it on board ?

A

High concentrations are most likely from a gas bursts (eg fixed fire fighting system)

Only way to remove it is by venting the sub to the atmosphere

32
Q

CO2 / H2 burners use what to burn carbon monoxide into what three things ?

A

Use a catalyst chemical to burn carbon monoxide into :

Carbon dioxide
Hydrogen
Hydrocarbons

33
Q

What is done with the three products produced in the Burners ?

1) CO2 ?
2) H2?
3) Hydrocarbons ?

A

1) re enters the atmosphere and is removed by CO2 scrubbers

2) turned into water vapour

3) turned into CO2 and H2O

34
Q

Burners are operated by who ?

A

FWD ME staff

35
Q

Burners are controlled from what position and indicate where ?

A

Locally and indicate on PMS

36
Q

Burners can be crash stopped by making what switch from where ?

A

Emergency stations switch on SCC.

37
Q

Both burners are located where ?

A

Air purification compartment on 3 deck PORT side below SRs mess.

38
Q

Why is discharging hydrogen overboard avoided ?

A

Because the hydrogen doesn’t disperse and can be detected.

39
Q

What equiptment eliminates the need to discharge hydrogen overboard ?

How does it work ?

A

Gas management plant (GIMP)

Works by accepting CO2 and hydrogen form the LPE and scrubbers which is then mixed to form a liquid called methanol before being discharged over board.

40
Q

System code for gas management plant ?

A

GMP

41
Q

GMP operated by who ?

A

FWD ME staff

42
Q

GMP can be operated from what position and indicates where ?

A

Locally controlled and indicates on PMS

43
Q

The GMPs can be crash stopped from where using what ?

A

The emergency stations switch on the SCC

or the switch on 3 deck outside the electrolyser compartment.

44
Q

Where is the GMP located ?

A

In the electrolyser compartment on 3 deck STBD side below JRs mess.
