Week 5 Flashcards
what determines whether tissues use glucose or fatty acids as an energy source?
depends on when how last ate as glucose can be used but only shorterm where fatty acids last weeks or even months in the body and if all your tissues needed glucose to survie it would not last long as u need a constant source of glucose so there not many tissues that only use glucose as an energy souce which is the brain
insulin dose what
promotes glucose transport into cells via an insulin sensitive glucose carrier(Glut4, esp in skeletal muscle and fat)
promotes potassium uptake into cells
promotes glucose storage as glycogen in liver
promotes growth
which blood glucose is high what is secreted is it glycogen or insulin?
insulin
what are Ketones ?
soluble forms of fatty acids
can replace glucose for energy metabolism even the brain
are acidic
in order for the brain to recieve glucose what happens in the body in the post absoption state ?
glucose is mobilised from glycogen in liver
glucose is from amino acids and glycerol
what causes type 1 diabetes mellitus?
Symptoms of type 2 diabetes
Symptoms of type 2 diabetes
what type 2 diabetes drug increases cell senitivity to insulin and suppress glucose synthesis in liver?
metformin(biguanides)
what type 2 diabetes drug stimulates insulin release and increases tissue sensitivity to insulin?
sulfonylureas
what type 2 diabetes drug inhibit glucose absorption from the intestines?
alpha glucosidase inhibitor
if insulin levels are severely decreased in type2 what may need to be add what type 1 diabetes mellitus treatment?
insulin
what is a prophylactic (intended to prevent disease) to type 2 diabetes?
exercise and healthy eating
