Week 4A - Vesitubular pt 2 - Tues han 28 Flashcards
what do semicircular canals detect vs otolith organs?
ssc - angualr accelration
otolith - vertical/horizontal 9linear acc ,+ gravity
what are the names of the 2 hair cells ?
sterocilia and kinocillia
how are hait cells activated -
deflected
why do u feel like spinning in the opposite direction when u stop?
when spinning in one drieciton and accelrating sterocilia are defelected to kin when u stop you decellarte quickly and the decceleration leads to hyperpolarization and a decrease in firing rate in the opposite direction
You are a passenger in vehicle travelling from Kelowna to
Vernon. There is little traffic, so you are travelling at a constant
speed. What statement best describes the activity of the utricle
vestibular afferents
they have the same firing rate as compare to rest - moving at constant velovity
why does someone get the spins when they drink too much?
alcohol is blood thinner , so decreases density of blood
density between endolymph + cupula is disturbed - less density in cupua causes hair cells to move artifically - esp when lying fown the hari cells get deflected up without any accelerateion
esssentail - blood thinner , decrease density inblod, decrease density in cupula causes hai cells to be defelcted artificially
what is BPPV and who does it occur in?
benigh paroxysmal positional vertigo
occurs in older adults
what are 2 causes of BPPV?
idiopathic (unknown)
head hit
what happens in BPPV (vertigo) and what is the treatment?
the otolith crystals get dislodged in the semicircular canal - esp when lying down and teh canal becomes more sensitye
epley maneuver - directed the crytal out of canal
what canal does the epley maneruver work on?
posterior
what is a common symptom with theyes in BPPV
Nystagmus - rapid involunaty rhythmic movement of eyes
what is epley maneuver
head laid back about 30 degrees - eye twittichw ill occur
head to other side
move to side (45 degrees)
sit up
move vrystal to acnal opening
need tright times and angles so crystal can get out
A patient comes to Drs. Nigel, MD and Sasha, MD. They
complain about vertigo and feelings of nausea when
performing specific movements. Which parts of the vestibular system are most likely affected - going up and down in elevator, syaing no to question
saccule
horizontal
true or false menieres dissease occurs on both sides of body?
false - one side
what is the cause of menieres?
idipathic (ubnnkonw)
what is menieres disease?
increase fluid in the labrynth canals, increases pressure in the endolymph - membrane channels is durupted or mebrane between peri and endolymp breaks, mixes fluidss (pos and neg charges) leading to ecrease firing on rates
icnrease firing rat eon intact side - lads to sensatin of head roation
Why does drinking excess of alcohol lead to vertigo
dwsity gradient in cupula decreases
hari celsl defelted (esp when lyinf down) bc less dense the endolymph, change sin firing rate
what ssc is nodding eys
anerior
what ssc is shaking head no
horizontal
waht ssc is carwheel
posterior
when dirnking excess alcohol leads to vertigo this is bc of decreased density in the _____
cupula
staning up spinnning is ___ canal
horizaontal
spinning on floor is -___canal
anterior
