Solid viscera
Liver, pancreas, spleen, adrenal glands, kidneys, ovaries and uterus
Hollow viscera
Stomach, gallbladder, small intestine, colon and bladder
Measures to enhance abdominal wall relaxation
•Empty bladder
•Keep room warm
•Position pt supine – pillows under head & knees
•Examine painful areas last
Auscultation begins where?
At the Right Lower Quadrant (RLQ)
What sound should be heard over percussion of abdomen?
Tympany, Dullness over solid organs
If you identify mass, what do you note?
–Location, size, and shape
–Consistency and surface

What order is the abdominal exam done?
Inspect, auscultate, percuss, palpate
Abnormal bowel sounds
Hypoactive and hyperactive
Abnormal vascular sounds
Bruit and venous hum
Abnormalities upon palpation
