Week 4 Optimising upper limb function and Acquired Neuro Communication disorders Flashcards
What are some strategies to prevent subluxation?
- Train & strengthen muscles around shoulder (focus on Abduction and external rotators - supraspinatus)
- electrical stimulation
- the use of slings?? or strappings?
Is a commons sequel to stroke - up to 84% of patients have this.
It is also a cause of poor recovery of the upper limb function
Shoulder pain
What are some strategies to prevent subluxation?
- positioning
- patient education - reminders of arm, family and staff involvement
- task specific training and strengthening of rotator cuffs
What is the admission criteria for CIMT?
- 10 degrees wrist flexion
- 10 degrees abduction of the thumb
- 10 degrees extension of 2 other digits
- an intense therapy
- patient consent and behavioural contract
This is when the patient learns not to use his other limb (affected limb)
Learned non-use
Is a collective name for a group of neurologic speech disorders that reflect abnormalities in the strength, speed, range, steadiness, tone, or accuracy of movement required for breathing, phonatory, resonatory, prosodic aspects of speech production)
Dysarthria
A strategy to manage learned non-use.
Has three components:
1. restraint of non affected UL
2. Massed practice in the affected UP
3. Transfer of practice to everyday life (functional practice)
CIMT - Constraint induced movement therapy
What do you use to assess shoulder pain?
- VAS - visual analogue scale
- McGill Pain Questionnaire
- ROM
- Function
An impairment in the volitional speech production, although linguistic and motor execution abilities are relatively preserved.
Problem with motor planning/programming
Apraxia of speech or speech apraxia
An impairment in language. It may affect production or comprehension of language and ability to read or write, understand symbols.
Left hemisphere stroke - most common cause of this conditon.
Aphasia
