Week 3 Spasticity and Pathophysiology Management Flashcards
VELOCITY DEPENDENT motor disorder, involving an increase in tonic stretch reflexes with exaggerated tendon jerks.
SPASTICITY
STRETCH SENSITIVE muscle contraction in absence of volitional command, including command to neighboring or distant muscles and absence of phasic stretch of affected mucle
- TONE INCREASE OF THE SURROUNDING MUSCLES
Spastic Dystonia
INAPPROPRIATE ANTAGONIST REECRUITMENT which is triggered by volitional command in the absence of stretch
Spastic Co - Contraction
What is rigidity?
- Bidirectional resistance to passive stretch, it is not related to speed, and is not a result of over active stretch reflex
The amount of resistance to passive elongation or stretching when a muscle is relaxed
Tone
The loss of length/range due to shortening of muscle length due to a decrease of sarcomeres within that muscle.
- atrophy
- loss of sarcomeres
- accumulation of connective tissue
- increase spindle responsiveness
Contracture
What are the objectives in treating spasticity?
TO IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE
- relive symptoms and reduce disfigurement
- ease personal care and positioning
- improve function and mobility of a specific limb
- reduce burden of care
- enable ADL
