What is the general social hierarchy definition?
Hierarchy is one of those recipes for living that have been evolved, tested and winnowed through hundreds of generations of human social history

Social hierarchy is an implicit or explicit rank order of individuals or groups with respect to a valued social dimension
The social psychology of hierarchies distinguishes what?
Power, status and leadership?

Asymmetric control over valued resources
What is power status?
Administration/respect in the eyes of others
What is power leadership?
Social influence to achieve shared goals
With clear rank differences in groups we get what?
Better coordination and less conflict in our group
Knowing who is high in a group helps us what?
Know when and where to move
Why is having a clear hierarchical structure in groups good?
Reduces conflict in our teams so we can do better - increases team performance
What happens when there isn’t an hierarchy in a group?
Group performance suffers - we do worse as a team
At individual level, why is higher rank desirable?
- Access to mates, valued resources, respect and admiration
- Less stress and better health outcomes
