the social relation between the contractor and his men protected the latter against exploitation

however the system become less useful as manufacturers increades output and required mass production

A

get the work done,
interpret the managements polecies to the workers
hired trained motivated and discipline the workers

driving method of supervision:
- combination of authoritarian rule and physical compulsion
- principal responsibility was to insure that workers did not reduce machine’s potential
- very little constraints on the foremans
