why study organizations - definitions
what is the definition of organizations for MAX WEBER
organizations are social relationships:
organizations have:
- closed and limits the outsiders by rules
-has rules, procedures and requirements
- has hierearcies
- clear chain of authority
- clear boundaries
what is the definition of organizations for KARL MARX
organizations are a form of collective organization activity for producing the relations of production
- relations of production within organizations –> creates class stratificaiton
- organizations distributes the means of production unequally
- primary axis of social stratification
- reason for exploitation
why study organizations
organizations create big and fundamental outcomes and transformations to society
organizations outcomes in 3 ways :
individual, communal, societal
organizational outcomes on individual level:
- your class is impacted by organizations
- the routinization of work and the alienating effect on individuals
- womens place in society can be given as an example –> having a breastfeeding room in the office
- placement in society and social stratification, education, health system
- Unequal rewards and opportunities are attached to organizational positions based on education, skills, diplomas
organizational outcomes on community level
- urban transformation
- creation of new neighboorhoods
- creation of new job oppurtunities
- change in rent
Ex: the steel factory ( betlehem steel factory ) created fertile ground for the suburbs collages, urbanization –> after the factory closed down it became a casino
organizational outcomes on societal level
- the organizations can prevent or lead to social change
Ex: the ford company introduced the assembly line which enabled mass production which affected the political and economic demography of the world. New forms of labour was introduced –>
