what is the relationship between capitalism and bureacracy
for weber bureacuracy is the foundation of any organization
Bureaucracy is the means of carrying «community action» into rationally ordered «societal action»
what does bureaucracy provide to capitalism

the rationality and the objectivity of bureaucracy creates a ground for capitalism where is can grow, and can have predictability
- bureacracy kees capitalism on its feets
What are the characteristics of Bureaucracy ( 6 )
1- has fixed and official jursidicational are defined by rules
2- has principles of office hierarchy and levels of authority
3- based on written documents ( files )
4- the people who work in modern organizations should be able to separate private life and office, the private sphere should be seperate
5- the authority and the dispersion of power is based on the expertises and the expert training knowledge of people ( power is distributed with expertise of that person )
6- Demands the full working capacity of the official ( tenure ) ( WHAT DOES THIS MEAN )
how does authority work in bureaucracies
theory of bureaucracy –> the authority is legally granted, the people who come to power should be appointed by superior authority rather than elected
there should be no individual priviledges - the relationships are not fixed by a sacred tradition
explain the impersonal position of the official
official positions are shouldn’t have form personal involvement, emotions and sentiments therefore decisions are governed by rational factor.
the officials are evaluated based on their educational certificates, degrees, qualifications where the status element comes from which is seperate from their personality or family or religion
Position of the officer is held for life—tenure for life
Guarantee against arbitray dismissal
Free from personal considerations
İndependent thinking and freedom of expression???
Offical receives a regular pecuniary compensation (salary)
According to status, not according to the work done
Guarantee against bribery, personal gains
what are the types of authority according to max weber
1- charismatic authority
2- legal authority
3- traditional authority
explain charismatic authority
- non rational type of authority
- charisma resides in the individual, persona, charm, grace
- the charismatic leader persuades people -> therefore has authority oveer them
- charismatic authority is temporary: resides in the individual ( not in the bureaucratic office and occupations
explain traditional authority
- the authority is inherited status
- rights and expectations ( the extent to which the authority depends on ) is established on the customs and practices as sacred.
- the order is about the precedent
historically it has 2 types:
1- patrimonial
2- feudal
explain rational authority
the power comes from the positon not from the leaders ability to lead or the leaders characteristics
- people follow normative rules and adhere to the leaders’ authority in a strict manner
bureaucratic leadership properties and types
bureaucratic leadership fells under the legal rational authority type
2 types of leadership
1- trasnormational which would include charismatic leadership
2- transactional, which relates to bureactratic leaders
the technical advantages of bureaucratic organization
- once established it is among those social structures which are hardest to destroy
- societal action which is methodologically ordered is superior to every resistence of mass action
- More complicated the organization , the more it demands the personally detached and strictly «objective» expert
