What is classical liberalism?
aims to protect the liberty of individual citizens
equality before the law, but not material equality
what did John Locke focus on?
- primarily concerned with the protection of individual human rights
- individual rights are claims that protect the liberty and property of individuals in a society
what does individual right to property mean?
the society or community needs to protect the property of its individuals
according to Locke, what is the highest purpose of joining a unity?
to preserve our property
what else did Locke emphasize in addition to individual right to property?
majority based consent, as each person who becomes a part of society, must also submit to majority rule
John Stuart Mill
- we need protection from group think
- people should develop as they choose, as long it doesn’t interfere with the freedom of others
- we must be able to live our own lives not governed by a set of rigid rules so that human life more diversified
what idea or action did mill oppose
- he thought that the people liked groups too much and that their choices were limited by what others were doing
- stuck to convention and refused eccentricity
- feared homogenization
- didn’t like social rights, as they threaten individual rights
what maxims did mill support?
- you are not held accountable for your actions, as long as they only concern your own interests
- only advice, instruction, persuasion, and avoidance can be used to express dislike of ones action
