Week 4 Flashcards
Structural Hierarchy of Contemporary Nursing Knowledge
1.) Metaparadigm
2.) Philosophy
3.) Conceptual Models
4.) Theory
5.) Empirical Indicators
The Second components of the structural hierarchy of contemporary nursing knowledge.
a statement encompassing ontological claims about the phenomena of central interest to a discipline, epistemic claims about how those phenomena comes to be known, and ethical claims about what the members of a discipline value
Philosophy
The third components of the structural hierarchy of contemporary nursing knowledge
a set of relatively abstract and general concepts that address the phenomena of central interest to a discipline
Conceptual Models
is synonymous with the terms: conceptual framework, conceptual system, paradigm, and disciplinary matrix
Conceptual Model
The fourth components of the structural hierarchy of contemporary nursing knowledge
One or more relatively concrete and specific concepts that are derived from a conceptual model, the proposition that narrowly describe those concepts, and the propositions that state relatively concrete and specific relations between two or more of the concepts
Theory
Are broad in scope.
They are made up of concepts and propositions that are less abstract and general than the concept and propositions of a conceptual model but are not as concrete and specific as the concepts and propositions of a middle-range theory
Grand Theory
A narrower in scope than grand theories.
They are made up of a limited number of concepts and propositions that are written at a relatively concrete and specific level.
Addresses a more or less relatively concrete and specific phenomenon by describing what the phenomenon is, explaining why it occurs, or predicting how it occurs
Middle-Range Theory
The fifth and final component of structural hierarchy of contemporary nursing knowledge
Nurses have developed a plethora _________ in the form of research instrument and distinct clinical tools.
Is to provide the means by which middle-rang theories are generated or tested
Empirical Indicators
Methods of Theory Development
1.) Theory-Practice-Theory
2.) Practice Theory
3.) Research Theory
Directs that theory development in nursing is based in parallel to other theories used in other discipline
Theory-Practice-Theory
Directs that the theory development is based on life/work experience and professional practice of theorist
Practice Theory
Directs that the theory development is based on the extensive research done by the theorist
Research Theory
Requires understanding of selected scholarly terms, definitions, and assumptions so that scholarly review and analysis may occur.
Attention is given to terms and defined meanings to understand the theory development process that was used.
Three categories of theory components are presented as a basis for understanding the function of each element in the theory-building process
Development of Theory
Three Categories of Theory Components
1.) Concepts and Definition
2.) Relational Statements
3.) Linkage and Ordering
The Building blocks of theories, classify. the phenomena of interest
Concepts
