The legal protection of original literary, artistic, musical, and dramatic works of authors, composers, playwrights, artists, publishers, and distributors for a specified period of time
Legislated by the Copyright Act of Canada
Protects works for 50 years after the death of the owner (Canada)
up to 56 years total (USA)

Used to include information that supplements the text, but would be distracting or inappropriate to include in the body of the paper
Each should only express one idea
Place a superscript numeral immediately after the text about which you would like to include more information (e.g., Scientists examined the fossilized remains of the wooly-wooly yak.”)
Number the notes consecutively in the order they appear in your paper
