Process Of Research Mater Flashcards
Week 5
Patient (Client), Population or
Problem
Focuses on a:
• Particular problem
• Disease
• Type of client
• Particular symptom
Intervention
• Relates to the intervention, prognostic factor or exposure the client is/will be subjected to Focuses on a particular treatment or exposure
Comparison
~ Identifies alternatives to the intervention
Outcome
• When defining the outcome, more effective is not acceptable unless it describes how the intervention is more effective.
• For example, more effective in preventing caries, or in decreasing probing depths.
PICO example
• Person / problem: People with gingival bleeding
• Intervention: Using an adjunctive alcohol-based mouthrinse
• Comparison: Compared to no adjunctive mouthrinse
• Outcome: Reduced gingival bleeding
Validity & Reliability
• Validity refers to how well a test measures what is purported to measure.
• Reliability is the degree to which an assessment tool produces stable and consistent results.
• Why is it necessary?
While reliability is necessary, it alone is not sufficient. For a test experiment) to be reliable, it also needs to be valid.
