Pragmatic Meanings
involves the process of transfer of information or
sentiment from the source-message-channel-receiver-feedback. In verbal
or spoken communication, we have speakers and listeners who receive
verbal messages from each other.
Verbal communication
cited different types of meaning based
on the distinctive signals that indicate how words used and sentences formed differ in meaning from
the other words and sentences in the language.
Madrunio, et. al. (2011, p. 30 citing Flowerdew and Miller in 2005)
the signals for this type of meaning are distinctive sounds that
are put together to form a meaningful item.
Phenomenological Meanings
the distinctive signal lies not in the sound itself, because there are some
words that have the same sound but have different spellings and meanings.
Semantic Meanings
refers to your knowledge of grammatical rules. It involves the use of
correct word order and the difference in meaning that results in the change in the structure of
a sentence.
Syntactic Meanings
this considers not just the words, but also the context/situation and the
relationship of the communicators to arrive at the meaning of the utterances.
Pragmatic Meanings
is an integral part of the communication
process. The way a person positions himself, keeps his hands and tilts his
head all convey much information about the person.
