What does music reflect?
Music reflects the attitudes and emotions of people as they expreience life
How ere the Confederate armies and Union armies different from eachother regarding the war?
The Confederate armies were weakened by the lack of supplies and men. The Union armies had supplies and men prepared.
Why did General Lee and General Grant meet? Where did they meet?
They started to negotiate surrender terms, then met in an area called Appomattox Court House, Virginia
What terms did Grant offer Lee that would not punish the South?
They had to pledge allegiance, surrender their army guns, then go home to their families
Describe the aftermath of the war.
Thousands of miles of land had be devastated, the South economy was destroyed, families lost their loved ones, the union was restored, and lots more to build peace and the nation
What was the Arlington house first used as?
It was a large musuem to the first president
What did Edwin Stanton authorize in 1864?
He authorized it to be a cemetery
What is Arlington known for today?
It became a national cemetery for the honored miltary dead
Who was Ely Parker?
He was born in New York, and was an American Indian
What two things did Parker want, but could not have? Why?
He wanted to be a lawyer, and officier. But he couldn’t because he was an American Indian
What was Parker’s role at the Appomattox Court House?
He drafted the Surrender terms as Lee and Grant spoke
How were soldiers cared for during the Civil War?
Soliders were cared for in tents or buildings, and they used supplies of rolled strips of cotton or linen used for bandages
Who did Dr. Dunn write a letter about in the war? What was she known for?
He wrote about Clara Barton. She brought supplies of bandages and food for the soliders, and stayed for days caring for the soliders
Why was she nicknamed “Angel of the Battlefield”?
Dr. dunn left for four days, and Barton stayed back
What organization did she create?
The American Red Cross
What did Lincoln say about the news of the Confedarcy surrender?
He said the southern states should not be punished, and he talked of a nation that would have equality for all
How did John Wilkes Booth feel about the surrender?
He was angry, and not willing to change the way he thought
Describe what happened on the night of April 14th.
Booth shot Lincoln, then escaped by leaping onto the stage in the middle of the play
What does mourning mean?
The expression of deep sorrow
How did troops honor Lincoln for his funeral?
An elaborate funeral was planned for him
What ended up happening to John Wilkes Booth? Were there others involved?
He was killed when he refused to surrender. Others who knew of Booths plan were arrested and tried in Military Court
Describe events that happened after the summer of 1865.
The Confedarcy was gone, Jefferson Davis was jailed, the country had a new president
