WEEK 3: Variables, concepts and measures Flashcards
Subject variables
Subjects variables are characteristics of the participants or subject and can not be manipulated
Examples: Gender, religion
Nominal variables
variables which are measured by allocatingcases to categories
Nominal variables
variables which are measured by allocatingcases to categories
What terms are used instead of IV and DV in non experiments
Predictor variable (IV)
Criterion variables (DV)
Mediator variables
Responsible for?
Explains the relationship between the independent variable and dependant variable
Responsible for the relationship between two variables
Moderator variable
Shows that the relationship between the IV and DV is not consistent throughout the data
Stevens theory of scales of measurement
How many types of measurement?
Different types of?
Order from least to most powerful
Agrued that there are 4 different types of measurement with different mathematical properties
Need different types of statistical analysis
Order
least powerful- nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio scales of measurement- most powerful
Difference between confounding variabe and extranoues variable
An extraneous variable has the potential to influence the DV in an experiment
A confounding variable does have an unwanted effect on the DV. It is difficult to establish whether the impact on the DV was due to the IV or a confounding variable
