Cosmetology Concepts 1 wk 3
What is Ph?
Numerical Measurement that indicates the acidity or alkalinity of a water-based substance
What is the pH of hair, skin, and nails?
between 4.5 and 5.5
What is the pH of alkaline solutions?
5.5+
What is the pH of acidic solutions?
> 4.5
What are the characteristics of both acidic and alkaline solutions?
What is the difference of each level on the pH scale?
pH starts with the behavior of water
What methods are used to measure pH and which one is the best to use?
pH meter, indicator liquid, indicator paper. The best method is the pH meter.
What does pH balanced mean?
That the products are at 4.5 to 5.5 pH
What is the definition of solutions, suspensions, solvent, admiscibles & miscible?
Solution: mixture of two or more kinds of evenly disbursed molecules suspensions: mixtures of two or more molecules that separate when left standing and need to be shaken before used.
Emotions: formed when two more invisible substances are united by binder or gum like substance.
Solvent: liquid that dissolves asubstance. Water is considered a universal solvent.
What are two parts of a surfactant and what do they do?
Lipophilic and hydrophilic.
Their surfactant tail which loves grease and hates water.
And the surfactant head which loves water and hates Grease
What is porosity, elasticity, density?
Porosity is the number of voids in an object. elasticity is the stretchiness of an object before it breaks and density is the weight of an object
What are the hair cuticles, cortex, and medulla?
Cuticle: outer covering of the hair shaft.
Cortex: second layer with unique protein structures.
Medulla: center core of hair shaft
What is the hair bulb, follicle, dermal Papalia?
What is trichology?
Technical name for the study of hair
What is keratinization?
Process of cells, changing shape, drying out and forming keratin protein
