What is ergonomics?
Science that looks at:
- how you work
- what body movements, positions, tools and equipment you use
- the effect these have on you and your clients health and comfort
How do you prevent neck and back strain?
- work with back straight, stand with feet parallel to hips
- keep back straight and abdominal muscles pulled in; sit squarely in chair
- hold back erect, bend at the knees, lift with your legs
- bend knees slightly, pull in abdominal muscles when reaching up; called a pelvic tilt
- stand on a footstool when reaching for supplies on a high shelf
- sit with legs uncrossed, feet flat on the floor
How do you prevent foot and leg problems?
- don’t stand or sit for long periods of time; change positions
- Wear comfortable rubber soles shoes or low broad heeled shoes
- use shock absorbing inserts inside your shoes
- use an anti-fatigue or comfort mat
- use support hose to reduce leg swelling
Recommendations to prevent food and leg problems (service specific)
- hydraulic chairs should adjust up and down at least 5”
- use a stool or moveable seat if necessary to rest your feet
- raise feet on a stool when you take a break
- adjust facial stool and facial chair or bed up or down

6-8 hours of sleep helps keep fatigue away
