Week 3: Reference Values for Laboratory Tests Flashcards
What is a normal total red blood cell count in women?
4.0-5.5 million/mm3
What is a normal total red blood cell count in men?
4.5-6.2 million/mm3
What happens if total red blood cell count is low?
may be anemic, or may have lost blood volume
What happens if total red blood cell count is high?
May be dehydrated or at risk for blood clots
What is a normal hematocrit level in women?
38-46%
What is a normal hematocrit level in men?
42-54%
What happens if hematocrit is low?
may have anemia, blood loss, or malnutrition
What happens in hematocrit is high?
may be dehydrated or at risk for blood clots
What is a normal hemoglobin level in women?
12-16 g/dL
What is a normal hemoglobin level in men?
14-18 g/dL
What happens if hemoglobin is low?
possible blood loss or nutritional deficiency
What happens if hemoglobin is high?
possible dehydration or risk for blood clot
What is a normal total white blood cell count?
4500-11000/mm3
What happens if white blood cell count is low?
risk for infection
What happens if white blood cell count is high?
possible infection, inflammatory response, or anemia
What is a normal platelet (throbocyte) count?
150,000-400,000
What happens if platelet (thrombocyte) count is low?
delayed clotting
What happens if platelet (thrombocyte) count is high?
potential for blood clots
What is a normal total lymphocyte (TLC) count?
> 1,800 cells/mm3
What happens if total lymphocyte (TLC) count is low?
decrease immune function, may have protein deficiency, can delay wound healing
What is a normal serum albumin count?
3.5-5.5 g/dL
What happens if serum albumin is low?
may be malnourished, may cause tissue edema, may be a sign of metabolic stress or inflammation…. correlated with pressure ulcer severity
What happens if serum albumin is high?
may be dehyrdated
What is a normal serum prealbumin level?
16-40 mg/dL
What happens is serum prealbumin is low?
may be malnourished, may be a sign of metabolic stress or inflammation, mortality rate increases as prealbumin decreases
What is a normal serum transferrin level?
> 170 mg/dL
What happens if serum transferrin is low?
may have protein deficiency or may be malnourished
What happens if serum transferrin is high?
may have iron deficiency
What is a normal blood glucose level?
70-100 mg/dL
What happens if blood glucose is high?
may have poorly controlled diabetes
What is a normal urine glucose level?
negative
What happens if urine glucose is present?
may have poorly controlled diabetes or kidney disease
What is a normal BUN (blood urea nitrogen) level?
8-20 mg/dL
What happens in BUN is high?
have have kidney disease or be dehydrated… associated with wound healing
What is a normal creatinine level?
0.8-1.2 mg/dL
What happens if creatinine is high?
may have kidney disease
What happens if creatinine is low?
decreases with malnutrition
