WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT ELEMENTS OF PERSON
individual, family, community, population
EXPLAIN THE INDIVIDUAL ELEMENT OF PERSON
- the person at the centre of any nursing process
- collaborates with healthcare professionals during care
WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF FAMILY
- most basic social group
- consists of 2 or more members
- depend on eachother
- members can be related or self-defined
- can extend beyond household to include community
WHY DO NURSES NEED TO UNDERSTAND FAMILY
- families are a part of an individuals/ patients health experience
- many individuals cope with complex caregiving of members in their families
- nursing requires us to prepare, advocate for, and support families with the burden of caring for another family member
WHAT ARE SOME THINGS EVERY FAMILY HAS
- social system
- structure
-certain basic functions - moves through stages of life cycle
WHAT ARE SOME FUNCTIONS OF FAMILY
- protection
- nourishment
- stimulation
- socialization
– transportation co-parenting, economic support, personal encouragment
which is why we need to inquire about families, use language that is bro
DO WE FOCUS ON STRENGTHS OR WEAKNESSES OF FAMILIES
strengths!!, when we look at negatives families can feel labeled and stigmatized, acting like you are the expert and fix a problem according to your perspective is a trauma inducing process.
WHAT ARE SOME ELEMENTS OF CULTURE AND FAMILIES
- Both nurses and families have cultural values and beleifs that are brought into interactions
- diversity occurs within cultures, not just between them
- ideally you ask a family about thier cultures and beleifs because we are all unique
- learning about culture opens us to possibilites but doesn’t give answers
WHAT IS A COMMUNITY
a group of people who share a geographic dimension and a social/relational dimension
WHAT IS POPULATION
a collection of individuals who have one or more personal or environmental characteristics in common
