What is NOT reflection?
Reflection is not just thinking about and event or experience
- It requires more than replaying or thinking about your practice
Is not just about the negative… reflect on positive experiences too.
What is the goal of reflection?
“To challenge an ultimately change practice” (Cooney, 1999)

Requires examination and analysis

- the process is not complete without action
When should reflection happen?

- All of them should result in new learning that enhances behaviours or perspectives or practices to make things better
What is reflection before action?
thinking through a situation before (planning, what will happen)
What is reflection on action?
retrospective examination of the experience (looking back, what happened in the past)
What is reflection in action?
occurs in the moment of the activity and influences clinical decision making for that moment
- in the moment, mindfulness
Why is reflection important to nursing?
- CNO requirement
- Enhances exploration of multiple ways of knowing
- A process that exposes thoughts, feelings and behaviours
- self awareness of how we want to practice compared to how we do practice
- Fosters self-directed learning
- identifying own learning needs)
- Results in new learning and new goals
- Critical examination and questioning leads to new ways of thinking and behaving in practice
What are the multiple ways of knowing?
empirical, personal, emancipatory, ethical, aesthetic

- Learner brings to the reflective process personal dispositions or qualities/characteristics
- influenced by present and past lived experience
- Expected to demonstrate the following dispositions:
- a will to learn, a will to engage, a preparedness to listen, a preparedness to explore new experiences, a determination to move forward, a will to speak, intellectual humility (open-mindedness)
How does the reflective practice help learners to explore learner expectations?
