What is protodeclarative
Request for a response from caregiver about object
What is a lean interpretation of protodeclarative
- Expectation that social partner will exhibit response based on past experience
- Means-ends reasoning
What is a rich interpretation of protodeclarative
Infant is aware of social partner having a separate psychological perspective and uses pointing to influence the contents of their mind
What are the 3 theoretical perspectives on pointing
- Nativist
- Cognitive
- Social Learning
What’s the nativist theory on pointing
Pointing is an evolutionary adaptation for linguistic reference before we identify with words, we identify with gestures
Critiques of the Nativist view
- Depends upon rearing history, language trained apes point with their index finger
- Humans point with their hands as well
- Apes point with their fingers too
