an organisms complete set of instructions, all the genetic info needed for development, stored in DNA
Genotype
o An individual’s inherited genetic makeup
Phenotype
o The individual’s appearance and behavior, shaped in part by genotype
Zygote
o Germinal period: first 14 days
o Zygote begins duplication and division within hours of conception
Development of the placenta

Organism grows rapidly
Sperm and egg fuse
Embryo
o Embryonic period: third through eighth week

o Head takes shape
o Eyes, ears, nose, and mouth form
o Heart begins to pulsate
o Extremities develop and webbed fingers and toes separate
Fetus

Fetus
* Genitals form and sex hormones cause differences in fetal brain organization
* By three months, the fetus weighs about 3 oz
* Experiences the period of greatest brain growth during the fourth, fifth, and sixth months
Age of viability
o Age at which a preterm newborn may survive outside the mother’s uterus if medcial care is available
o About 25 weeks after conception
o Brain is able to regulate basic body functions, ex. breathing

o These include any agent or condition, including viruses, chemicals, and drugs, resulting in birth defects or even death
Know the basic genetic difference between identical and fraternal twins.
