Skilled Trades: High Skilled =
Slaves have more access to knowledge because of skills they learned. Don’t wear shoes to Marc status.
Negotiations are worth more because he know how to do things. More expensive.
When could slaves negotiate
On Sundays and other religious holidays
Skilled Trades: Low skilled =
Not hard to acquire. Would carry coffee. No shoes. Worked in gangs and competed with other gangs for work.
Slave porters
Pay masters and keep small sum to self. Able to buy freedom. Able to hire people because masters aren’t looking over them. Owned but work independently. Here’s what happens in the streets. Mostly carry people.
Street Commerce:
Selling things on the streets. Pay set fee to owner than keep the rest. Poor pay. Slaves bought from each other. Tended to be women. Could live away, but has to be negotiated.
Domestic work:
Working home. Required lots of labor. Slave women would care for babies. Connections would be built.

Opportunity to ask owners for things. Opportunity to be free.
How did we seen families among free and enslaved black populations so far?
Juan Roque, leaving property to his daughter. The one guy who led the black militia and had a wife. The widow who became “queen” of a black confraternity after her husband died.

Left property to his daughter after he died. A part of two confraternities (Black Brotherhood of the Zape Nation and Brotherhood of the most Holy Sacrament). Had a list of masses to help him reach purgatory.
