Why the Atlantic Slave Trade happened (2)
- During 1400s, development of Portuguese commercial ties with Africa
- During 1500s, annihilation of indigenous people of the New World.
Why Atlantic slave trade continued (2)
- Men and women ratio in Africa, the need to get rid of men to keep the women and men equal.
- Growth of sugar. Became a hot commodity and was in high demand. More labor was needed for it. Sugar economy and production rose.

- Captives torn from families and homes
- Marched long distance from inland to coast
- Held in encampments on the coast for weeks/ months. Unsanitary, little food + water
- Slave trips had worse conditions. Overcrowded, not sanitary
- Average death rate 12-15% on 30-60 day ocean crossing. Death rate one year after arriving in American ports = 50-60%
