Drug Classes w3 (p1)
Beta Blockers (end in ‘OLOL’)
Anti-arrhythmia ( Digoxin)
Anti- arrhythmia ( Amiodarone )
Calcium Channel Blockers (end in ‘pine’)
Beta Blocker
Examples, Indications, MOA, AE, NC
Examples (MABS)
- Metoprolol
- Atenolol
- Bisoprolol
- Sotalol
Indications
- Used for hypertension
- Heart failures,
- Angina, MI
- Tachyarrhythmia (aka tachycardia - high HR)
MOA
- Beta 1 works in the heart and Beta 2 works in the lungs
- These medications work by reducing cardiac contractility (HR) by depressing sinus node rate & slowing conduction of AV nodes.
Ad. effects:
- Nausea
- Hypotension
- bradycardia (slow HR)
- bronchospasm
Nursing Considerations
- Monitor BP & HR before and after
- Reduce dose gradually
- Complete postural BP
Anti-arrhythmia (Digoxin)
Indications, MOA, Adverse effects & Nursing Considerations
Indications for:
- Heart failures
- Atrial arrhythmia (AFibs)
- Cardiac Glycosides: increase the output force of its heart but decrease its rate of contractions
MOA:
- increases the efficiency of the heart to improve
- influences the movement of ions in & out of myocardial fibres (heart muscles).
- decreases sympathetic activities
AE:
- N/V
- CNS disturbances
- digoxin toxicity
NC:
- assess signs & symptoms of digoxin toxicity
- monitor renal functions
