Week 3 Flashcards
1
Q
What is the null hypothesis?
A
The hypothesis that there is no effect in the population
2
Q
What is a sampling error?
A
A sample that doesn’t represent the population
3
Q
What could happen in a sampling error?
A
Could end up with 2 samples that actually come from different populations
Could end up with a sample from one of each population and be in danger of making a type 1 error.
4
Q
What happens if the p value is > .05?
A
The probability is high that the null hypothesis is true
The outcome is not significant and the effect is unlikely to be found in the population so cannot be generalised.
5
Q
What happens if there is a small SE?
A
Means the sample is close to the population and unlikely to have sampling error
