Week 1 Flashcards
What are statistics used for?
To gain insight into patterns that allow us to make inferences about psychological behaviour
What is a p value?
The probability that the null hypothesis is true, the likelihood of an effect being the result of chance
What are confidence intervals?
The degree to which an effect might be found in a population
What are inferential statistics?
A way to generalise from a sample to a population
What is a between participants design?
Compares the performance of different PPs assigned to one experimental condition
May suffer from individual differences
What is a within participants design?
Compares the performance of the same PPs across all experimental conditions
Requires counterbalancing
Outline the independent t-test
Between Subjects design
Categorical IV and Continuous DV
Nonparametric equivalent: Mann-Whitney U
Outline the paired t-test
Within Subjects design
Categorical IV and Continuous DV
Nonparametric equivalent: Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test
