Definition of poisoning?
A pathological state caused by a toxic agent.
Toxic agent can be a medicine, plant, environmental pollutants, drugs of abuse.
Routes of entry can be Oral, inhalation, absorption via the skin, intravenous.
Accidental or Intentional.
What is Polypharmacy?
Mixture of drugs
Multiple medications being taken
What does activated charcoal do?
It binds to the poison and helps to remove without causing anymore damage within the body.
What is gastric lavage?
Irrigation and aspiration - flush with fluid and suck fluid out.
What is quality use of medicines?
Best possible use of medicines to improve health outcomes.
What are adverse drug events?
Any injuries resulting from medication use.
- physical harm
- mental harm
- loss of function
What factors contribute to the drug response?
Age - infants and elderly more sensitive to drug effects
Development to tolerance
Disease States- liver/kidney disease affect metabolism & elimination
Individual behaviours/beliefs
Pregnancy - altered plasma volume
Drug - drug interactions
