Week 2 Flashcards
What is pharmacodynamics?
What the drug does to the body - interacts
What is an Agonists?
Activate and bind to receptors to produce a response = Efficacy
What is an Antagonist?
Bond to receptors but NO response = No Efficacy
Block/prevent receptor response.
What is a competitive Antagonist?
Transient blockade
Can reverse agonist effects
What are the 3 cell barriers?
1-Extra cellular
2-Membrane
3-Intracellular
What is ADMET?
A - absorption D - distribution M - metabolism E - elimination T - toxicity
What is Albumin?
The protein which drugs bind to and travel in the plasma.
Albumin helps with maintaining blood pressure.
Helps with keeping fluid in blood stream
What is the drug half life?
3 hours half the drug concentration is eliminated out of the body.
Depending on the drug the half life could be different. Liver damage could be 6 hours for the half life of the drug.
What is pharmacokinetics?
The drug movement in the body
Drugs reach their site of action
Drug concentrations in the body change with time
Weak Vs. Strong Agonists
Codeine - weak agonist because it doesn’t bind to the receptors good.
Morphine - strong agonist because it binds to the receptor really well.
