Week 3 Flashcards
Pupillary Light Reflex/Response (PLR)
Constriction of a pupil in response to an increase in light intensity.
Proximal
Nearest to a point of reference
Dysphagia
difficulty in swallowing.
Perfusion
- the act of pouring over or through, especially the passage of a fluid through the vessels of a specific organ.
- a liquid poured over or through an organ or tissue.
Conscious Proprioception (CP)
the conscious awareness of body position and movement of body segments. It is regulated by the lemniscal system through pathways that begin in joint receptors and end in the parietal lobe of the cerebral cortex; it enables the cortex to refine voluntary movements.
Alopecia
Hair loss
Epiphora
An abnormal overflow of tears down the face, due usually to stricture of the nasolacrimal duct. Called also illacrimation.
Tenesmus
ineffectual and painful straining at defecation or in urinating. Called also straining.
Thready
weak, thin; shallow.
Edema
an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the cavities and intercellular spaces of the body.
Anisocoria
inequality in size of the pupils of the eyes.
Ipsilateral
situated on or affecting the same side.
Excoriation
superficial traumatic abrasions and scratches which remove some of the skin substance. Commonly caused in animals by rubbing or scratching pruritic skin.
Hyperkeratosis
- hypertrophy of the horny layer (stratum corneum) of the skin, or any disease characterized by it; the hyperkeratoses may have distinctive formats, e.g. annular (ring formations), basket-weave, compact, laminated.
- hypertrophy of the cornea.
Hypotension
diminished tension; lowered blood pressure. In animals almost the only occurrence is in severe peripheral circulatory failure, especially traumatic, toxemic or anaphylactic shock.
Constrict
To make smaller or narrower, especially by binding or squeezing
Vagal
Of or relating to the vagus nerve
Arrhythmia
variation from the normal rhythm, especially of the heartbeat.
Tachycardia
an excessively rapid action of the heart; the pulse rate is usually above 100 beats/min.
Systole
the contraction, or period of contraction, of the heart, especially of the ventricles, during which blood is forced into the aorta and pulmonary artery.
Blephorospasm
spasm of the orbicularis oculi muscle of the eyelid.
Stranguria
strangury: Difficulty in micturition in which the urine is passed only drop by drop with pain and tenesmus.
Palpate/palpation
To examine by feeling and pressing with the palms of the hands and the fingers./the technique of examining parts of the body by touching and feeling them.
