What is professionalism?

Professionalism is exhibiting a courteous, conscientous and generally business like manner in the workplace
Explain how nursing is both a science and an art
It is a science because we use advanced techniques and have an in-depth knowledge of the human body, diseases, and any specialty information required to care for a patient
It is an art because we establish relationships with others and apply our knowledge, skills and judgement in a compassionate way
What are the 9 roles of nurses?

what is the media portrayal of nurses
sometimes it can be negative (dentyne ice gum commercial sexualizes nurses)
This can be a problem because it undermines our knowledge and skill
what is the public belief of nurses
we are honest - RNs are ranked highest for honesty among professionals
many people seek RNs for advice on:
- self care or immediate post op care
- over the counter medical products
- administration of prescription drugs
- interpreting MD info
What are the two main books/things that nursing students look at for theoretical foundation?
Metaparadigm of nursing (person, health, environment, nursing)
Strengths based nursing care (approach to care that looks at a patient and families inner and outer strengths)

- bachelors degree in nursing is the minimum requirement
- scope of practice (the more complex a patient’s plan of care is, the larger the need for an RN is)

From the CNO:
