Week 2- Water Balance, Blood & Immunology Flashcards
Define cell membrane
Selective barrier between ECF and ICF, also binding sites for receptorss
What are aquaporins?
Channels that allow water to move freely
What molecules move freely between compartments?
Waste products, gases, nutrients
Explain ion distribution
Ions move freezing across capillary wall ( Plamsa & ISF), e.g high Na in ECF & high K in the ICF
Describe the cell membrane structure
Made of a phospholipid belayer which is amphipathic, contains channel proteins
Discuss electrochemical gradient
Ions are charged and the spread/ distribution of these ions creates an electrochemical gradient. Molecules moving down this gradient is passive transport, molecules moving up it requires energy and is active transport
