Week 1- Homeostasis Flashcards
Define homeostasis
The process of keeping the body at homeostatic equilibrium, maintanance of internal body environment
Explain negative feedback
When the body reacts after a stimulus to maintain homeostasis, most common
Explain feed forward
When the body reacts before a stimulus e.g. salvation before eating
Explain positive feedback
When the body amplifies the reaction e.g. action potentials
How is homeostasis maintained
Through negative, positive and feed forward inhibitions. Involved cooperation action of organ systems controlled by nervous system and endocrine system
Identify fluid components of cells
Extracellular fluid (ECF) outside cells contains plasma and ISF. Plasmas is in blood vessels and the ISF is in the cell membrane. intracellular fluid (ICF) inside cells
How to calculate ICF
Can’t measure it but ECF - plasma
Explain dilution principle
Inject substance that will only stay in one compartment, calculate volume of distribution amount injected/ concentration of sample
