Week 1- Life At Cellular Level Flashcards
Describe structures present in all cell types
Plasma membrane, cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, ribosomes & genetic materials
Define the roles of nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosome, Golgi apparatus, lysosome, peroxisome, mitochondrial, flagellum, cilium
Nucleus- stores dna/ dna replication, endoplasmic reticulum- protein synthesis/ lipid metabolism, ribosome- rna synthesis, Golgi apparatus- processes/ sorts lipids and proteins, lysosome- digestive enzymes
4 elements used to construct human bio molecules
H, O, N, C
Explain polarity
Water is polar, polarity gives rise to hydrogen bonding, molecules that contain hydrogen bonding or charged molecules tend to be water soluble
Explain pH
Body pH is 7.4, expressing H+ over a range of concentrations. Buffers help maintain pH the main ones are phosphate and bicarbonate
Define metabolism
Continuous flow of energy and matter through intermediary metabolites and enzyme catalystsed reactions
