Proteins Flashcards
Define classes of amino acids
Bases-Cytosine, guanine, adenine, thymine, uracil
R-groups- aromatic (hydrocarbon rings), sulphur containing, basic, acidic, polar, miscellaneous
Describe the function of proteins
Structure (keratin) , functional (enzymes, immune system)
Define primary structure
Amino acids form a polypeptide chain
Define secondary structure
3D spatial arrangement of amino acids in a polypeptide chain
Alpha helix or the beta pleated sheet
Define teritary structure
R groups interact with each other on the polypeptide chains,
Define quaternary structure
Several polypeptide chains interact with each other to form a complex of protein molecules e.g haemaglobin
Discuss conjugated proteins
Glycoproteins- contain carbohydrate molecules
Lipoproteins- contain lipids
Metalloproteins- metal ions
Describe globular proteins
Used for storage, enzymes, or ones, transporters, structural
Describe fibrous proteins
Muscle fibres & connective tissue
