week 2-the spinal cord Flashcards
describe the gross structure of the spinal cord
the gross structure of the spinal cord is that it is enclosed in the vertebral column
Begins at the foramen magnum and Ends at L1 or L2 vertebra
the Functions of the spinal cord include:
Providing two-way communication to and from the brain and body
Major reflex center: reflexes are initiated and completed at the spinal cord
Explain the clinical application of lumbar puncture, and how it is performed.
Medical procedures are performed to obtain a sample of cerebrospinal fluid
for diagnostic purposes or to administer medications directly into the CSF.
Clinical application of lumber puncture:
1. Diagnosis of central nervous system disorders: lumber puncture allows for the analysis of CFS to diagnose various conditions affecting the central nervous system.
- Evaluation of intracranial pressure: measurement of
CF(cerebrospinal fluid) pressure during lumber puncture can help assess and monitor intracranial pressure which may be elevated in conditions like hydrocephalus or certain brain injuries - Administrations of medications: lumber puncture can be used to
deliver medications directly into SF for specific therapeutic
purposes
