week 2- blood Flashcards

1
Q

List and describe functions of blood

A

the blood is the life-sustaining transport vehicle of the cardiovascular system its main function is protection( prevention of infection and blood loss), regulation(temperature PH Levels and fluid in the circulatory system), and transportation (delivering o2 Transporting metabolic wastes to lungs and kidneys for elimination
– Transporting hormones from endocrine organs to target organs_

Q

Describe the structure, function, and production of erythrocytes.

A

also known as RBC. They are filled with hemoglobin for the transport of gas
The cell has a biconcave disc shape, is anucleate, and essentially has no organelles
RBCs are dedicated to respiratory gas transport
* Hemoglobin binds reversibly with oxygen

Q

Describe the process of hemostasis

A

hemostasis is a fast series of responses to stop bleeding and requires clotting factors such as platelets

Three steps are involved
Step 1: Vascular spasm
Step 2: Platelet plug formation
Step 3: Coagulation (blood clotting)

Positive feedback cycle: as more platelets stick, they release more chemicals, which cause more platelets to stick and release more chemicals
