Distal Means
Away from the trunk
Superior means
Towards the head
Inferior means
Away from the head
Posterior/Dorsal means
Towards the back
Anterior/Ventral Means
Towards the front
Medial means
Towards the midline
Lateral means
Away from the midline
Transverse cut is
Cutting at hip.
Upper and lower body
Frontal cut means
Front and back sides
Median cut means
Left and right
Abduction is
Away from the midline
Adduction means
Towards the midline
Example of flexion
Bicep curl towards body
Example of extension is
Bicep curl opening away from the body
Circumspection is
Combination of flexion, extension, addiction and abduction.
Round pivot of ankle
Inversion example is
Big toe up and to much weight on outside of foot
Example of eversion is
Outer foot is up and weight is on side of the big toe
Dorsiflexion is
Toe up
Plantaflexion is
Toe down
Explain Fibrous joint sutures
No joint cavity
Slightly or not at all moveable
Collagen fivers span the space between bones
Sutures are immovable fibrous joints that bind the skull bones together.
Explain tuberous joint - Gomphoses
Immovable joint
Peg in socket
Eg tooth in socket
Fiberous joint - Sydesmosis
Two honest bound by ligaments only
Slightly Movable dependant on length of fibers
Cartilaginous joint - Synhondrosis
Connecting tissue is hyaline cartilage
Epiphyseal (growth) plate
Rob attaches to sternum
Epiphyseal plate in children binds epiphysis and diaphysis
Cartilaginous joint - Sympysis
Nucleus pulpous -squishy call that reforms to original size.
As we age it will diminish (shrinkage)
Ends of articulating bones covered with hyaline cartilage.
Disc connects the 2 bones
Slight amount of movement
Synovial joint
Moveable joints with a large range of motion
The joint cavity is sealed by synovial membrane, which secretes a nutrient rich fluid (synovial fluid)
Shoulder joint has 3 degrees of freedom.
Multi axial joint.
Moment of
Diarthrosis
Amphiarthrosis
Synarthrosis
Freely Moveable
Slightly Moveable
Little to no movement
Proximal means…
Towards the trunk
